Message The rotary guys found this out early on. Since their engine basically comes apart in vivisections they can port their water passages and get them really smooth. What they found out was that if the water passages become machined surfaces the water flows too fast at the surface of the passage. What you really want is turbulent flow at the coolant/passage interface and laminar flow at the center of the passage. So be careful. Granted casting flash always hinders fluid flow, due to restrictions they can cause and possibility of cavitation in the coolant passages. What would be really helpful is for someone to find the hot spots in the block after removeing the flash, then machine fins to increase surface area in the part of the water passage to help disapate more heat into the coolant. Just my thoughts on this. Good writeup.
